A Still Life is Just a Game of Proximity

  • A set of boules was created, casting different types of hand-sized fruit in plaster to form the pieces of the set. My interest in boules began during a two-month stay in Barcelona, when on long walks through the city I often encountered groups of men playing the game. Their presence was so common that not only were they connected to the cultural landscape of the city, but they were also intertwined spatially as a part of the city's architecture and geography. I was struck by the relationship of leisure to the built environment and how these informal games constituted an important quality of public life. The relationship of spontaneous play to public life was thrown into relief by the looming presence of the dormant Olympic sport complexes that shadow the city perched atop Montjuïc. Interestingly, Montjuïc is also the site of a former military fortification, from which the city was fired upon during the Spanish Civil War. My time spent in Barcelona became an important point of research that I returned with to my studio in Brussels, where my experiences of observing games of boules became entangled with an interest in Flemish still-life painting. The outcome of this research and the work produced became a compositional device to talk about spatial relationships of leisure and historical ideas of abundance and early nation-states. Expressions of leisure have been a continuous focus of research and exploration, but importantly, the genesis of this work was rooted in and singularly developed by direct engagement with the cities of Barcelona and Brussels.
